Little Colorado River
Navajo Nation/Grand Canyon National Park, AZ

A year-round mineral spring, appropriately named Blue Spring, along the Little Colorado River emits water satiated with calcium carbonate, turning the stream a striking, almost surreal, turquoise. The warm, cloudy waters tumble over travertine cascades before mixing with the cooler, clearer, and emerald-green Colorado River in Marble Canyon. The Hopi, a sovereign Native American tribe primarily residing in northeastern Arizona, believe that life begins near this confluence in a place they call the Sipapu. This small hole in the ground represents the sacred portal where their ancestors emerged from the underworld into the present world. At least ten additional Native American tribes also hold deep spiritual ties to this area. Even though the Navajo Nation passed a subsequent resolution to protect this area from development permanently, developers continue to push a proposal to construct four hydroelectric dams upstream on the Little Colorado River.
