The Confluence

Yampa and Green rivers
Dinosaur National Monument, CO

The Yampa River, one of the few undammed, free-flowing rivers remaining in the United States, meets the regulated Green River in Echo Park. The wild and free channel carries nutrient-rich sediment along its course, enabling four endangered fish species—the humpback chub, bonytail chub, Colorado pikeminnow, and razorback sucker—to swim, spawn, and thrive in the silted and seasonally warm waters. The fish aren’t the only ones that need this water to survive. To support municipal growth, developers have proposed pumping water from the Yampa, under the Continental Divide, to the Front Range, which would affect the river’s ecology. The differences between these two differently managed rivers allow scientists, politicians, officials, and others to study the outcomes of our choices.
