Light of the Desert

Lake Havasu/Colorado River
Lake Havasu, AZ

Millions of migratory birds traverse the west coast of the United States from South America to the Arctic (and back again) on the north-south route known as the Pacific Flyway. While birds need no navigational assistance to find their way to and around the lake, the 1.5 million human visitors per year to this area get some help. Replicas of 28 North American lighthouses along Lake Havasu’s 400 miles of shoreline serve as navigational lights for boaters. Like birds and people, water is on the move here, too. Southern California as well as Phoenix and Tucson in Arizona receive their negotiated distributions of water through canals, tunnels and lift from this reservoir. Even as states work together to put drought contingency plans in place and voluntarily agree to reduce their consumption, the water supply from the Colorado River remains overallocated.
