Lake Mead/Colorado River
Lake Mead National Recreation Area, AZ

The Colorado River emerges from the Grand Canyon and dissolves into Lake Mead, formed after the construction of the Hoover Dam in 1936. When full, the lake holds 9 trillion gallons of water, making it the United States’ largest reservoir. It’s also seen as the epicenter for water management along the Colorado River. According to a research study conducted by Brian D. Richter, author and the president of Sustainable Waters, less than 1% of the Colorado River goes to mining while 4% goes to commercial/industrial uses, 4% to power generation, 13% to domestic supply, and 79% to crop irrigation. Of the water dedicated to crop irrigation, over half goes toward feeding cows. According to Richter’s calculation, a quarter-pound hamburger requires 450 gallons of water to produce.
